Analysis to understand travel patterns in high-growth areas in Florida
Project Overview
The Florida Transportation Builders’ Association (FTBA) conducted an origin-destination analysis to understand travel flows through the I-75/SR-326 Highway Interchange, north of Ocala, and compared them with growth areas in Central Florida.
As such, the Urban SDK team studied the I-75 / SR-326 Highway Interchange Trip Distribution across the summer months (June-August), between 2020 and 2022. The top destinations for trips passing through the interchange were concentrated between Tampa and Orlando. Communities directly on the I-75 corridor accounted for 69% of the total distribution through the interchange. Whereas the I-10 corridor, further north, only accounted for 9%.

Methodology
Urban SDK’s platform was used to pull insights into travel flows across the summer months between June and August, and between 2020 and 2022.
A virtual boundary was placed around the I-75/SR-326 Interchange and used to tag a sample of anonymous location data that pinged within. The data points were then mapped for their origin and destinations outside of the boundary and aggregated to the nearest County. Location data was obtained through third-party sources with only Lon/Lat and timestamp provided for analysis and removed through aggregation for data privacy.

Findings
The I-75 corridor’s placement within Central and North Florida plays a major role in accommodating travel between major population centers in the state. The top 10 destinations for trips passing through the I-75/SR-326 interchange are primarily located within the Tampa-Orlando corridor and along I-75 north towards Lake City. Combined, the top 10 counties accounted for 69% of the observed trip distribution through the interchange. Out of those top 10, only two counties were not located directly on the I-75 Corridor (Lake, and Orange Counties) which accounted for 6%.
