Monitoring trip distribution through the Florida cities of Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Tampa, and Orlando
The Florida Transportation Builders’ Association (FTBA) conducted an origin-destination analysis to understand travel flows through the I-75/I-10 Highway Interchange and compare them with growth areas in North Florida.
As such, the Urban SDK team performed an I-75 / I-10 Highway Interchange Trip Distribution across the summer months (June-August), between 2020 and 2022.
Trip distribution through the interchange was concentrated toward Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Tampa, and Orlando accounting for 58% of the distribution. Communities directly on the I-75 corridor accounted for 47% of the observed distribution, whereas the I-10 corridor accounted for 42%.
Urban SDK’s platform was used to pull insights into travel flows across the summer months between June and August, and between 2020 and 2022.
A virtual boundary was placed around the I-75/I-10 Interchange and used to tag a sample of anonymous location data that pinged within. The data points were then mapped for their origin and destinations outside of the boundary and aggregated to the nearest County. Location data was obtained through third-party sources with only Lon/Lat and timestamp provided for analysis and removed through aggregation for data privacy.
The findings emphasize the broad regional impact that the I-75 and I-10 corridors play within North Florida. The top 10 destinations for trips passing through the interchange created a “T” between the cities of Tallahassee, Jacksonville, and Tampa-Orlando accounting for 58% of the total trip distribution through the interchange.
Communities directly on the I-75 corridor accounted for 47% of the observed distribution through the interchange. Communities directly on the I-10 corridor accounted for 42% (18% of which is shared with I-75) of the total distribution. Combined, 72% of observed trips through the interchange started or ended their trips within a community directly served by I-75 and I-10.
